What are young people’s perceptions and use of Artificial Intelligence?
We surveyed Australia’s youth to find out what they really think about Generative AI.

Discussions about the impact of Generative AI on education have been missing one key voice that bears the greatest impact of the changes this technology brings: students and young people.

To address this issue, in April 2023, YouthInsight conducted the first Australian exploratory study with students and young people to understand their perceptions and use of Generative AI.

What are young people’s perceptions and use of Artificial Intelligence?

We surveyed more than 500 young people in Australia aged 14 to 27 to find out what they really think about Generative AI.

In 2023, discussions about the impact of Generative AI on education often overlooked one key voice that would be most affected by this rapidly evolving technology: students and young people.

To address this gap, we undertook Australia’s first exploratory study focused on young people’s perceptions and use of GenAI.

Now, in 2025, we return for the second wave of this research to explore how those perceptions and behaviours have shifted over the past two years.
